Device settings include default settings, profiles, templates, and common device
configurations that can be assigned to the device or device pool. Some of the common
elements in device settings are described over the next few pages. Figure 9-8 displays
the options that are available from the Device Settings submenu.

Device Defaults
Use device defaults to set new Load ID (phone operating system binary image) default
characteristics for the types of devices used with the CUCM. The device defaults apply to
all auto-registered devices of that type within a CUCM cluster. A different Phone Load
Name (Load ID) can be specified at the device configuration page after the device has registered.
The following device defaults can be set for each device type to which they apply:
■ Device load: Lists the firmware load that is used with a particular type of hardware
device
■ Device pool: Allows the administrator to choose the device pool that is associated with
each type of device
■ Phone button template: Indicates the phone button template that is used by each type
of device
To set device defaults from the CUCM Administration web page, go to Device > Device
Settings > Device Defaults. Modify the settings that you want to modify and click Save.
Figure 9-9 displays the options available from the Device Defaults Configuration page.

Phone Button Template
Creating and using phone button templates provides a fast way to assign a common button
configuration to a large number of Cisco Unified IP Phones.
CUCM includes several default phone button templates. When adding phones, one of these
templates must be assigned to the phones.
All phones must have at least one line assigned. The remaining buttons can be used for
additional lines, speed dials, privacy buttons, or service URLs. CUCM 6.0 also supports
programmable line keys (PLK) on Cisco Type B phones. PLKs enable supplementary
service phone features such as call hold, park, transfer, and conference to be applied to
physical buttons on the phone.
Before adding any IP phones to the system, create phone button templates with all the
required combinations of phone button templates for all IP phone models in use.
To create, modify, or delete a phone button template in CUCM, use the CUCM
Administration web page and navigate to Device > Device Settings > Phone Button
Template. Click Find and choose an existing phone button template to display a
configuration screen similar to the one displayed in Figure 9-10.

Softkey Template
Softkey template configuration allows the administrator to manage softkeys on Cisco
IP Phones. CUCM supports two types of softkey templates: standard and nonstandard.
Applications that support softkeys can have one or more standard softkey templates that are
associated with them; for example, CUCM has the Standard Feature and the Standard User
softkey templates that are associated with it. Standard softkey templates cannot be modified
or deleted. To create a new softkey template, copy one of the templates, edit it and save it
with a new name, or create a new one from scratch.
Choose Device > Device Settings > Softkey Templates to access the Softkey Template
Configuration window in CUCM Administration. Click Find and choose an existing
softkey template. If the softkey template is a default, the softkey template positions cannot
be modified. Click the Copy button and rename the softkey template. Click Save. The
Configure Softkey Layout Related Link is selected in the upper-right portion of the screen
by default. Click the Go button. Select a call state to modify the softkey templates for and
move the softkeys from the Unselected Softkeys to the Selected Softkeys (and vice versa)
of the screen by selecting the softkey and clicking the left and right arrow buttons. Softkey
positions can be modified, too, by clicking the up and down arrows. Different softkeys are
available on the phone depending on the call state (on-hook, off-hook, phone ringing, and
so on). Figure 9-11 displays the configuration of a softkey template.
