Route patterns are classified as off-net (by default) if the Provide Outside Dial Tone check
box is selected in the route pattern. The assumption is that the route pattern is being used
to route a call off of the cluster.
The Allow Device Override parameter can be checked at the route-pattern level. The device
override changes the call classification method for outgoing calls if the device the call is
routed over has a different call classification than the route pattern matched. The device
override may be used when a route pattern points to a route list with multiple path
selections. The first path for route patterns used between clusters is usually an intercluster
trunk, which should be considered to be an on-net call because it uses the IP network. If the
call fails over to the secondary path, the PSTN gateway is used, and the enterprise might
want to classify the call differently.
The classification is used by several features, including the following:
■ Call forward settings: Call forward can be configured differently for internal (on-net)
versus external (off-net) calls.
■ Block off-net to off-net transfers: This is a toll-fraud prevention feature that ensures
that the company telephony infrastructure is not misused to connect two external
parties (usually separated by a long distance) by an internal facilitator.
■ Drop conference when no on-net party remains: This is a toll-fraud prevention
feature that ensures that a conference is dropped when only external parties remain in
the conference. If this setting is not enabled, an internal facilitator could again try to
connect two external parties (this time by setting up a conference and then dropping
out, leaving the two external parties alone in the conference).
